Conquering your limiting beliefs

One day from the middle of know where appeared Wonder Boy. His primary aim was to enlighten humans that were stuck in a world of uncertainty and direction.

Unlike other super heroes, his powers of enlightenment were all based on using the power of the mind.  He was able to clear a path in people minds so they could move forward freely with a clear vision in front them.  He freed them from the super glue that stuck their thought patterns in such a way, that re-in forced their limiting beliefs.

“So how did he release them from the super glue?” I hear you ask.

Well one day, he had an appointment to see a lady who was stuck in her house, she couldn’t move forward or backwards because of all the stuff that cluttered her house, especially her bedroom.

Not being able to move forward or backwards caused her a physical and mental problem.  She lacked energy, suffered with depression and was very anxious about the prospect of clearing and cleaning the clutter.

Wonder Boy quickly assessed the situation and decided that the only way for her to move forward was to clear the clutter from her mind with one of his super power techniques, called Time Line.

First, he got her to relax by taking deep breaths, and then he got her to stand up and simply asked her to imagine she was standing on an invisible line. He then asked her to point to where she thought the future was and where the past was.

The future was directly in front of her and the past was behind her.

“Great” said Wonder Boy, “guess what “he said in an excited voice, “we are going to transport you into the future to a point where you will have cleaned your room and cleared the clutter, are you ok with this.?”

“Yes” replied the lady.

Wonder Boy, asked her to step onto an imaginary line, he then said to her “in a minute I am going to ask you to close your eyes and imagine yourself standing in your bedroom.

“Before I ask you to close your eyes, please point out to me where you see next Thursday, as this is the day by when you would have achieved your goal of cleaning the room?”

The lady without hesitation pointed to where she thought Thursday was.  “Brilliant” said Wonder Boy, “now step forward one week onto next week Thursday and close your eyes.  Now take a deep breath in and slowly release out and again please, now do it again one more time, releasing your breath slowly and relax.”

He then asked her to describe the colour of the room, the colour of the wall, what the room smells like, the colour of the curtains, the colour of the bedsheet and finally the colour of the carpet.

At this point she paused, she said couldn’t see the colour of the carpet.   Wonder Boy realised that she was stuck and quickly asked her to move whatever it was that was covering the carpet and then tell him what colour it is now.  Again, without hesitation, eyes closed she physically used her hands to move the rubbish on the floor.

“It’s a reddish patterned colour” exclaimed the lady with excitement.

“Brilliant” said Wonder Boy, “we are now going to pick up all the rubbish and clutter and place them in a bag, have you got a bag?”

“Yes” she replied.

“What colour is the bag?” said Wonder Boy?

“It’s a pink bag” she replied.

“Fantastic, let me know when you have finished clearing the rubbish from the carpet” said Wonder Boy.

Having cleared the carpet, she went on to clearing the clothes, moving boxes and emptying the room, and at the end of the session, Wonder Boy said “How do you feel now?”

“Energised” she said.

Wonder Boy replied “With this energy, you will go home and continue to clean your room and the next time we meet you can tell me the good news”.

The following month the lady concerned came to see Wonder Boy.  Her demeanour was completely different, her eyes were filled with excitement and energy, bursting to tell him how she had got on.  Her state of depression was no longer visible.

She was no longer stuck in the super glue of depression and anxiety; her room was clean and she has now got a clear vision of the direction she wants to go in and is continuing to make progress.

Am I truly happy at work?

How many of us can truly say they are happy with work?  What I mean by this is, do you really enjoy what you do and get paid for it?

In life, we sometimes drift from job to job, without really stopping to think or asking a question like, what do I really want to do, that I am passionate about?

I for one started off as a 17-year-old in engineering, completing a City & Guilds in Mechanical Engineering, to become a skilled Engineer.

 get a trade, I hear my dad saying, get a trade” so I did.

Did it make it me happy?  – Not really

Did I enjoy doing it? – No

Did I look forward to getting up and rushing to work because it was my passion? Errrmm let me think about this one…NO way.

Did I learn from it? Yes, I did.

It taught me life skills, like understanding people’s personalities.  It taught me how to deal with racism at a young age.  I learnt how to communicate with managers that abused their position of power by using it like a loose cannon.

My fascination of how the human mind worked and what makes people tick started then, I kept asking questions like:

Why do some people act the way they do?

Why is that person angry all the time?

Why is that person talking to himself all the time?

Why is that person the joker of the pack and likes to be ridiculed and humiliated?

Why is that person sad most of the time?

Why is that person so happy?

It’s no surprise that I gravitated towards the happy people.  This was my experience leaving school and entering the world of adulthood in my first job.

The very first book I read to do with the mind was way back in the early 80’s called Mind Mapping by Tony Buzan. It covered things like speed reading, increasing your memory and powerful brainstorming.   My curiosity didn’t stop there, I went on to studying body language, which was useful for my second job as a sales person.  What I found was that by naturally building rapport quickly, I could communicate with people at all levels allowing me to build relationships and provide whatever products and services I had to offer at the time.

To the outside world, you would think that I was living the dream, but was I truly happy and passionate about what I was doing?

I enjoyed the trappings of being a very good salesman earning lots of money and spending it, I hasten to add, but was I truly happy?  I loved the accolade of  being good at selling and liked as a salesman. I loved the challenges, the company cars, the incentive programmes, the holidays, but was I truly happy?

Skipping through the years, I have arrived at a place where I can say I am truly happy with what I am doing (one day you will read my book detailing a lot more than I can reveal in a blog). I enjoy what I am doing, I get satisfaction from what I am doing and I help others to do the same.  And, guess what, I get paid for doing it, isn’t that wonderful!

So, are you truly happy with what you are doing?

A book that was recommend to me by a fellow Coach & Trainer will help you to answer the question above, it’s called Time to Think by Nancy Kline.

Here’s one for you to ponder on, “If you could do something that you truly enjoy doing and could get paid for doing it, what would it be”? 

Then ask yourself this question:

What am I assuming here that is stopping me doing what I really enjoy doing?   Stay silent and listen for the answer.

As we approach the end of 2016, how will you make 2017 a great year?

How well do you know yourself?

Before you embark on going to your interview, you might want to ask yourself the question, “Am I totally prepared”?   If you hesitate before answering and you question your preparation/research on the company, you probably have not done enough.

When you look at a job spec and you say “yes, this job was made for me, happy days” Then you rock up at the interview, self-assured thinking “this job is so mine” with little or no preparation. What do you think the outcome will be?  Have you considered that in that very moment 101 more applicants felt the same way on reading the job spec?

So how can you be different and what can you do in preparation to be ahead of the game?

How well do you know yourself?   We often ask our friends, colleagues, siblings and parents the age old question,” What do you think my strengths are”?  Response tends to be, you’re really good with people, hardworking and a team player and all the other clichés you can think of.  You then pluck up the courage to ask the killer question to the same people, what do you think my weaknesses are? Response…you haven’t really got any, oh that’s a hard one, oh… I know tell them that you are a perfectionist which means you might take too much time on a project or task. Yes, that’s good one.

So let’s park your strengths and weaknesses to one side for a moment.  How many of you know what your behaviour is like when put under pressure?  How many of you know your blind spots? (what others see in your character and behaviour that you don’t see). How many people think they are a team player and in reality they are not?

What if you had an insight to or a profile report that clearly describes you as an individual and how you respond to working as part of a team.  Knowledge is power right?  So if you have information about yourself, wouldn’t you use it for personal development and would you also refer to it occasionally, pulling it out of your tool box as and when you need it.

How about enhancing your strengths which means maximising on your abilities to be even stronger? What about the areas that require development? Imagine being able to say to an interviewer succinctly and confidently where your strengths lie and how they will benefit the company. Imagine being able to say that you recognise certain areas of your behaviour that need developing, and describe what you are doing about it.  How powerful will you feel knowing that you can confidently and colourfully describe yourself in a concise way?

Remember the job spec has been written for you, all you need to do is to plan properly to prevent a poor performance and deliver a summary about you that puts you ahead of the game and blow their minds by pre-empting questions about your behaviour/personality.

Behaviours can be changed and developed, we all have the ability to do this, some of us need help while others naturally do what they need to do.  I consider myself as someone that helps people to get on the right track for their intended destination and in doing so the first step is your 10-minute questionnaire to be completed online.  Remember you don’t know until you know and there are things you don’t know about yourself that you will need to know in order to succeed.

How important is it to set goals?

Constantly telling you to be on purpose, know what you want, get to the end game, begin with the end in mind, chunk your goals down to smaller bits and feel good when you achieve them, shoot for the moon and if you miss you will be among the stars.  Be consistent in your approach, be focused, keep your eye on the ball, visualise the end results and you will be successful.

What makes a great leader?

We are often told that we should lead from the front, set an example, never ask someone to do something that you are not prepared to do yourself.  As a leader we also need to be strong exuding confidence, power and a belief system that is unbreakable.  Napoleon Hill carried out a study in his book Think and Grow Rich about successful people that became great leaders of their business, and he found that they all had one trait in common, and that was their belief system.  If your belief system is strong and impenetrable, you will succeed and reach your goal or achieve your desired outcome.   So is this something we can learn, or is it something that is hard wired in our minds at birth?

Personally I think we all have the ability to change our direction in life, we all have the ability to change our emotional state, we all have the ability to change our belief pattern.  In Steve Covey’s book The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, he explains a paradigm shift with a story of a man on a train platform, without going into too much detail, this man went from being agitated, angry and frustrated to being humble, apologetic, caring and sympathetic in a nanosecond, which means what we see and believe to be true at that the moment in time can be changed very easily in a blink of the eye.

Train Your Mind

One of my favourite quotes is:

“What the mind can conceive and believe it can achieve” Napoleon Hill.

We all have the resources within us to push ourselves to the limit.  However, some of us fall short of achieving what we want.  Each new year is a fresh start, we set off like a greyhound out of the traps, signing up to the gym, boot camp, Zumba, and many more.  How many of us last for a full year, or even 3 months?  I don’t know the answer, but what I can say based on my experience at my local gym, is that Personal Trainers are busy, the gym is full, and it generally last for 3 months before it goes back to normal and we can actually get on the equipment that we want to use without queuing.  We need to prepare our minds for the onslaught that we will inflict onto our bodies, we need to exercise our minds alongside our bodies to give us endurance.  Feed your mind with positive thoughts, develop your mind to be more active, reshape the thought pattern in your sub conscience mind to accept that you will be training for years to come.

Once you start to train your mind you will see how easy it is to achieve your goals.
